Songs and quotations

Many poems became songs, and isolated lines often travel farther than the poems from which they came. Quotations are efficient travellers, though they rarely carry all their luggage.

Political memory

Heine's writing has repeatedly returned to debates about censorship, exile, nationalism, and belonging. The circumstances change; the temptation to make easy certainties does not.
